Why Position Sizing Matters

Most beginner traders focus entirely on when to buy (the entry). Professional traders focus on how much to buy (the size) and when to sell (the exit). If you don't control your position size, a single bad trade can wipe out weeks of profits—or worse, your entire account.

The Golden Rule of Risk

The standard rule of thumb in professional trading is to never risk more than 1% to 2% of your total account balance on a single trade.

Note the keyword: Risk. Your risk is not your total position size. Your risk is the amount of money you lose if your Stop Loss is hit.

Step-by-Step Calculation

1. Determine your Account Risk ($): If you have a $10,000 account and risk 1%, your Account Risk is $100.
2. Determine your Stop Loss Distance (%): You plan to buy BTC at $60,000 and put your stop loss at $57,000. That is a 5% drop (0.05).
3. Calculate Position Size: $100 / 0.05 = $2,000.

You should buy $2,000 worth of Bitcoin. If the price drops 5% and hits your stop loss, you lose exactly $100 (which is your planned 1% risk).

The Role of Leverage

Leverage doesn't change your risk if you use proper position sizing. It simply reduces the amount of margin (collateral) you need to post to hold that $2,000 position.

If you use 10x leverage, you only need to put up $200 of your own money to control the $2,000 position. However, if the price drops 5%, you still lose the same $100. The danger of leverage is when traders use it to increase their overall Position Size without adjusting for risk, leading to liquidation.
