A common mistake traders make is getting tunnel vision on a single timeframe. You might see a beautiful bullish setup on the 5-minute chart, only to get instantly crushed because the 1-hour chart is in a aggressive downtrend.

The market is a fractal. Higher timeframes (macro) always dominate lower timeframes (micro). Your goal as a trader is to find Confluence—when the micro trend aligns perfectly with the macro trend.

The Core Indicators: 20, 50, and 200 EMAs

To determine the trend objectively, we use Exponential Moving Averages (EMAs).

• 20 EMA (Short-term): Shows immediate momentum.
• 50 EMA (Medium-term): Shows the intermediate trend.
• 200 EMA (Long-term): The definitive line in the sand for macro bulls vs bears.

Multi-Timeframe Confluence

Suppose you want to day trade on the 15-minute chart. To ensure you have the wind at your back, you should check the higher timeframes: 1-hour, 4-hour, and Daily.

1. If the Daily and 4H are in a Bullish Trend, you should only look for LONG setups on the 15m chart. Ignore all short signals.
2. If the higher timeframes are in a Bearish Trend, you should only look for SHORT setups on the 15m chart.
3. If the higher timeframes are mixed or flat, the market is chopping. Stay out or reduce your position size.
